Kew barometers
The Kew-type station barometer, constructed to a Met Office pattern, is the standard instrument used around the world. In the Kew barometer atmospheric pressure acts directly on the surface of the mercury in the cistern, causing the mercury level in the column to rise or fall as the atmospheric pressure rises or falls. Careful construction of the column and cistern ensures that the ratio of level changes resulting from a given change of pressure remains constant, so that the pressure can be read directly off the scale, using a vernier.

The direct reading barometer is a simple precision instrument using a mercury-filled glass column and reservoir fixed to a polished hardwood backboard on which the scale is mounted. The pressure corresponds to the level of mercury in the column.
Please note that all precision barometers are supplied in a purpose-built fibreboard case with a polystyrene cutout inner to support the instrument. Precision mercurial barometers should always be carried flat or upside down. Remove the barometer from the wall, incline or titl it gently and then place in a flat position. To re-hang the instrument, reverse the procedure.
